Since 2005, Martine Fougeron has returned to photograph and film her two sons, Nicolas and Adrien, and the intimate constellations that form around them in New York and France.
Nicolas & Adrien is a long-duration photographic project that unfolds through repeated encounters with the same people, from adolescence into adulthood. Over time, relationships evolve, new figures enter, new dwelling places emerge, and the familiar world of its protagonists becomes a territory of continuous rediscovery.
At the heart of Fougeron's photographic attention is inwardness — the sensory, emotional and physical intensity of aliveness, experienced from within. This intensity is central to what she understands as a youthful state of being, one that is not confined to adolescence but can endure and reawaken throughout life.
Her photographic language moves between documentary observation and cinematic presence, seeking out mysterious tensions between the spontaneous and the staged.
