Social Bodies. The individual as a social being: rules, codes and paradoxes.

With works by Merry Alpern, Peggy Anderson, Martine Fougeron, Dave Heath, Tanya Marcuse

The second group exhibition in the gallery's 6th birthday cycle, Social Bodies brings together different perspectives on the individual in society: traditions, rituals, garments, gender, family. Peggy Anderson's fresh portraits of Swedish fjord swimmers in their bathrobes recount a deeply ingrained cultural and family tradition; Dave Heath's magnificent black and white street portraits from the 1960s, all rare vintage prints, capture a deep sense of solitude and alienation in modern American society; Tanya Marcuse's elegant black and white typology Undergarments and Armor illustrates centuries-old efforts to contort the human body according to aesthetic and gendered ideals of the time; and, shown at the gallery for the first time, Martine Fougeron's lush colour series Nicolas & Adrien follows, over two decades, the coming of age of her two sons growing up between Manhattan and the Cévennes in the south of France.
